A young Thai woman receives a gentle application of talcum powder paste from a stranger during Songkran.

During the three days of Songkran, otherwise taboo actions pass muster and often are carried out with impunity. As you see in the scene above, on any other day of the year, a young man is forbidden from applying a slathering of gooey white paste on a complete stranger's face. During Songkran, it's not only tolerated but encouraged and welcome.

A young Thai girl walks past, armed with both a water gun and a bucket full of white talcum powder paste.

I tucked myself into a corner, behind a telephone booth, and prayed to the heavens that no one shot me with water while my dSLR was exposed to the elements. Thai people are mercifully kind when they see a reason not to shoot, which includes an overpriced piece of camera equipment.

A Thai guy chills among a sea of equally pasty people during Songkran on Khao San Road.

The photo above does not begin to document the clusterfarg of humanity slithering their way down the tourist street of Khao San Road. What normally takes 5 minutes to traverse one end of Khao San to the other took over 30 minutes with the incredible numbers of people jamming the street.
