Since the rediscovery of the Chinese Crested Tern, the area around Daqiu island has become a destination for serious bird watchers. The Chinese Crested Tern was previously thought to be extinct until its rediscovery on these very islets. Every June to August, the Chinese Crested Tern return to the Matsu islands for mating season hence that is the best time to catch a glimpse of these rare birds.
