Kashmiri women stand in Shalimar Bagh's cascading water fountain.

The Mughal emperors that ruled Srinagar built splendid gardens to get away from the helter skelter of daily life. Each successive Mughal emperor one upped his predecessor by building a garden - essentially parks built to Islamic standards - ever more lavish to pursue leisurely activities. Note: the central pavilion (next photo below) is visible in the background of this image.

These days, tourists and Kashmiris alike, make their way to Mughal gardens for essentially the same purpose as the Mughal emperors. You mostly see pursuers of leisure laying about the lawn and chatting idly with friends and family.
