A Formosan Sika deer on a high cliff's edge of Daqiu island of the Matsu islands in Taiwan.
The Formosan Sika deer was transplanted to the small island of Daqiu many years ago. Lacking natural predators on the island, many of the deer have grown up without a fear of humans. It's more than possible that a deer will approach a tourist and allow the tourist to pet them, particularly if he comes bearing food. However, a rather unfortunate side-effect of a closed environment like Daqiu island is the fact that inbreeding has led to distinct genetic abnormalities. I'm told the deer naturally have pointed antlers, not the stubby ones seen in the photo above.

A trip to the island is a short boat ride away from the island of Beigan. Ferries are scheduled to make the trip back and forth several times per day.

I managed to touch the smooth antlers of these deer and the sensation is like that of touching a smooth velvet fabric!
